Bourbon County Horse Walk of Fame Grand Opening

Bourbon County Horse Walk of Fame Grand Opening Bourbon County boasts some of the most outstanding horses in the world. The Horse Walk honors 50 of these distinguished horses with markers along Main St. Brochures will be available at the Grand Opening and Ms. Penny Chenery, Secretariat's owner, along with Mrs. Verna Lehmann, will be on hand for the opening ceremony. Downtown stores and restaurants will be open for the evening. Come stroll the Horse Walk and enjoy a beautiful fall evening in Historic Downtown Paris.

Downtown Paris ARTWALK - Recap

On July 17 Downtown Paris was filled with folks enjoying a beautiful night with friends, food, and fun. The sixth Downtown Paris ARTWALK was well attended. Hundreds of people visited friends and perused art on and around Main Street. Twenty-two venues hosted over forty artists. Artists included Paris locals and other artists from surrounding areas.

Artist Evan Pugazzi of Lexington referred to his first Downtown Paris ARTWALK as "a great experience." "It was great to celebrate art and enjoy an evening with lots of new friends in Paris,KY," said Fugazzi. Duncan Tavern hosted Winchester artist, Dewey Pope, with his graphite drawings of World War II soldiers, while Hopewell Museum hosted photographer, Mary Claire Estes. Murray West was on hand a Loch Lea Antiques and showed his photographs of Bourbon County. Many talented photographers were represented, such as, Merle Wasson, Holli Gibson, Janine Patton, Gail Asbury, Bobby Shiftlet, Bill Bench, Jo Ellen Pearman, Liz Foley, and Susan Black.

Several venues featured groups of artists. St Peter's Church and First Presbyterian Church showed off the work of many of their talented members, while stores like Fister Sisters, Frames on Main and Kentucky Bank had multiple artists featuring a wide variety of media and subject matter.

Bobby Shiflet, owner of Frames on Main Gallery, refers to Downtown Paris ARTWALK as "a social block party" and believes it is a great event for the community. Other participating galleries were Nancy Kleck's Art Studio, and White Horse Gallery. Pauline's Hair Salon hosted woodcarvers, J. Bryan and Kenneth Taylor.

Each venue offered refreshments, highlights included: Smoked pork tenderloin at Edward Jones, Sweet potato chips and honey blue cheese dip at Campbell's, Fresh fruit salsa at Varden's, a beautiful hors d'oeurve buffet at Kentucky Bank, Smoked salmon pate at Loch Lea Antiques, Champaigne punch at Ardery's, and Beer cheese at Fister Sisters.

After many requests to extend the hours, July's Downtown Paris ARTWALK ran until 9 o'clock. Restaurants including Magdalia's and Campbell's report having busy evenings for post- ARTWALK dining. "The food was great." said Lucy Cooper, who enjoyed dinner at Migdalia's with her husband and friends.

Downtown Paris ARTWALK is a volunteer run and organized event of the Main Street Promotions Committee. The Committee wishes to thank all the artists and visitors who made Downtown Paris ARTWALK a success; and a special thank you to the volunteers who help make everything possible especially the venues who graciously host artists and their artwork.

Paris Celebrates Paris, France

Paris Celebrates Paris, France from July 11 - 31. Downtown Paris is Celebrating its connection to Paris, France. "Paris was named for Paris, Fr. in 1790 to conform to the county name, Bourbon," says Kellie Scott, Outreach Librarian at Paris - Bourbon County Public Library. According to The History of Bourbon County 1785-1865, by H.E. Everman, Paris, KY was first named Hopewell. The county was named Bourbon in appreciation of France's help in the American Revolution. James Garrard, several time governor of Kentucky, and Bourbon County resident, was of French descent and promoted the name.

Stores and businesses will be decorated in a Parisian theme. The new flower baskets look lovely and we will have Fleur de Leis flags throughout Downtown donated by White Horse Gallery and Maysville Community and Technical College Paris Extension. As part of our celebration many stores are running specials. Ardery's Antiques is running an "Ooh-La-La" Summer Sale from Tuesday, July 14th through Saturday, July 18th offering discounts up to 20% off in their "Made In Paris" store as well as the antiques store. White Horse Gallery will be having a sale on selected items on July 16, 17 and 18. Discoveries Antiques invites you to come see a wonderful collection of fine old prints of Paris France landmarks in their store window along with memorabilia from Paris, Kentucky. In addition they will be having up to 50% off sale on Bastille Day, July 14. Fister Sisters Bakery will offer breakfast and lunch specials, and other in-store specials during July. "Faites Du Shopping à Paris!"

BOURBON COUNTY HORSE WALK OF FAME

The Bourbon County Horse Walk of Fame features distinguished horses associated with farms of Bourbon County. Our Bourbon County Horse Walk of Fame will consist of 2’ x 2’ cement squares permanently installed along the sidewalk in downtown Paris.
Each square will feature a noteworthy horse’s shoes (two) embedded in the cement. In the top center, a brass plate with the horse’s name, birth and death year, and Farm name, would be engraved. A mock-up can be viewed in the window next to Varden’s on Main Street.

ARTWALK FUN

Once again, on April 24, Paris hosted the ARTWALK. The Downtown was packed with people enjoying the over 50 artists, whose work was on display in stores and businesses through-out Downtown Paris. There were a lot of interesting pieces with quite a variety: children's artwork, oil paintings, native-american art, photography, folk art, pottery, pastels and sketches - and that doesn't even cover it all. The food was worthy of artistic mention too! The weather was beautiful and the streets were crowded with people out enjoying themselves. Several restaurants offered specials for the day and live music. Even those who don't consider themselves art enthusiasts enjoyed shopping and visiting with friends. This free Marketing class is being offered by the Main Street Program. It will be held at Ardery’s Antiques, 627 Main Street in Paris on Wed., April 8, 2009 at 8:30 am. Betty Lewis, will be our instructor. With over 36 years of experience in marketing, Betty is well qualified to speak on the subject. Betty served as Marketing Manager and Vice President of Marketing in the corporate world at Dozier Equipment International and Tridon, Inc. ,respectively, in Nashville, TN, where she was directly responsible for development of national advertising and marketing campaigns, direct mail customer lists and demographics, new product launches, national trade shows, and other facets of marketing. Eight of her years of experience have been in retail proprietorship in Franklin, TN., and Ardery’s Antiques in Paris.

The hour-long seminar will focus on easy, inexpensive ideas to market your local business in these “uneasy” economic times. Topics will include: * Development and Usage of Your Customer List - Your Best Asset * The Best Advertising Bang for Your Buck and * Easy Direct Mail Pieces That “Work”. This will be an abbreviated overview of how to make yourself visible to your customers on a limited advertising budget by incorporating basic marketing ideas that meet your company’s and your customers’ needs.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

I don't know about you, but I think I gained ten pounds over the holidays. It's great to be with all the relatives and see how big the kids are getting. Have you made any New Years Resolutions? The number one resolution - Lose Weight. Fortunately the YMCA and Curves are running specials to help us with that one. I love working out in Paris. It is quick and easy to park and get in and out; much faster than when I used to drive to Lexington - ugghh! Another thing we all do in January is return all those not quite right gifts, and shop for bargains. There are some great bargains here in Paris. Whatever you are looking for, check out Paris first. We have some really neat antique stores, from high end, gorgeous pieces, to items for the budget conscious shopper. There are too many antique stores to list them all here. If you enjoy antiques, Paris is the place to come. We have a lot more downtown than antiques. We have several interesting gifts shops where you can find deals on all sorts of things. I got the cutest purse at Horne's of the Bluegrass. Varden's is great for something unusual at an affordable price. MAIN ST. HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

DEC. 6 - DEC. 23

Main Street is conducting a Holiday Food Drive from Dec. 6 - Dec. 23. Please bring nonperishable food items to Downtown businesses with a Food Depot sign in the window. We will kick-off this event with a Pony-Cart in the Christmas Parade. The Main Street Holiday Food Drive will benefit Operation Food Basket and the Back Pack Program. The Back Pack Program requests food in easy to open individual portions appropriate for children's backpacks, such as fruit snacks, granola bars, or other snack items. Operation Food Basket will accept canned goods or any nonperishable food items. Thank you for your help.

Don't the Christmas window displays downtown look great? It looks beautiful at night with everything lit up. The Window Decorating Contest judges had their work cut out for them. They were very impressed with how nice the windows looked. They were instructed to base their judging on adherence to theme (Here We Come A Carolin'), creativity, and overall quality. After viewing the windows in the daytime and again at night, they chose the winners:
